THE PERSON IN THE
PERSON-CENTRED APPROACH
Being-with and being-counter in the therapeutic relationship
Abstract:
To view the human being as person is grounded in the conviction that we are both
independent, living out of our own resources, and interdependent, inevitably
connected with others. This implies tremendous consequences for anthropology,
epistemology, therapy theory and practice. The client experiencing their
self-in-development and the presence of the therapist enable both to encounter
each other. One of the central aspects of such an authentic relationship is the
character of therapist responses which derive from their counter-position in the
‘en–counter’ with the client. In this workshop we will further examine the
meaning of person, encounter, presence, (concordant and complementary) resonance,
confrontation and dialogue from a person-centred perspective.
