The person in the center of therapy.
The ongoing challenge of Carl Rogers for psychotherapy.
In focusing on the human being as a person and putting the person in the center of psychotherapy Carl Rogers founded therapy as an art of personal encounter. Ever since it has been the unrenounceable state of the art to view the human being in science, research and practice of therapy dialectically in their autonomy as well as in their interconnectedness. Thus Rogers gave decisive impulses and left a rich legacy to psychotherapy as such. While nowadays goal– and skill–oriented approaches are en vogue mainly because of socio–political claims for efficiency, open and holistic concepts and a relationship–orientated understanding become more important in various schools — a development undoubtedly influenced by the Person-Centered Approach.
Nevertheless these tendencies stay far behind the radical paradigm change of Rogers. The same goes for developments which are watering down or underrating the approach or simply make use of its good name. The fundamental positions of Rogers are not yet sounded out by far, in their radicalism, their profound humanism and their critical potential — within the approach and outside.
From a genuine understanding of person-centered anthropology, epistemology and ethics it is obvious that a concrete realization of a number of consequences and further developments in society and therapy is yet to come. Some of these provocative challenges for psychotherapy in general, the Person-Centered Approach in particular will be discussed.

Carl Rogers hat nachdrücklich die Person ins Zentrum der Psychotherapie gestellt. Damit steht der Mensch in seiner unaufgebbaren Dialektik von Selbstbestimmung und Beziehungsangewiesenheit im Mittelpunkt von therapeutischer Wissenschaft, Forschung und Praxis, und es gehört zum unaufgebbaren State of the Art, Psychotherapie als Kunst der personalen Begegnung zu verstehen. Mit seinem Person–zentrierten Ansatz gab Rogers entscheidende Impulse für die Entwicklung der Psychotherapie insgesamt. Wenngleich sich gegenwärtig ziel- und methodenorientierte Richtungen aufgrund der Forderungen nach Effizienzmaximierung und Erfolgsorientierung als quotenträchtig erweisen, so greifen zunehmend auch ganzheitliche Konzepte und ein beziehungsorientiertes Verständnis in verschiedenen Schulen Platz. Dies ist durchaus als Einfluss des Personzentrierten Ansatzes zu sehen.
Dennoch bleiben diese Tendenzen, oft weit, hinter dem radikalen Paradigmenwechsel von Rogers zurück. Dasselbe gilt auch für Entwicklungen, die den Ansatz selbst verwässern, verharmlosen oder vereinnahmen. Rogers hat für die gesamte Zunft entscheidende Impulse gesetzt und mit seinem Ansatz einen reichen Auftrag hinterlassen — mit einem Ansatz, dessen tiefer Humanismus und dessen kritisches Potenzial innerhalb und außerhalb des Personzentrierten Ansatzes bei weitem nicht eingeholt ist.
Aus einem genuinen Verständnis personzentrierter Anthropologie, Erkenntnistheorie und Ethik und den aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen ergeben sich provokante Herausforderungen für weitere Entwicklungen in Gesellschaft und Psychotherapie. Einige dieser Herausforderungen — für den Personzentrierten Ansatz selbst wie für andere therapeutische Orientierungen — werden diskutiert.
